The Institute of New Rural Development of Yunnan Agricultural University was established in December 2013. It is an interdisciplinary, relatively entity operated and open national research institution approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education. It aims to explore the establishment of a comprehensive service model based on the university and the combination of agricultural science and education, promote the close combination of politics, industry, learning, research and application, strive to become the new rural construction think-tank and service center for the country and Yunnan province.

In December 2013, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education approved to establish Institute of New Rural Development of Yunnan Agricultural University.  At the same time, the Ministry of Science and Technology awarded "National Entrepreneurship Training Base for Science and Technology Commissioners". In September 2014, The Institute was awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Collective of National Education System" by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Education. In January 2016, Yunnan Research Base on three dimensional rural issues and New Rural Construction was transferred to the management of Institute of New Rural Development. In January 2018, Institute of New Rural Development was awarded as the "Governing Unit of Yunnan Provincial Association of Popular Science Education Bases" by Yunnan Provincial Association of Popular Science Education Bases. From 2015 to 2021, Institute of New Rural Development Institute, in cooperation with China Research Institute for Science Popularization and Yunnan Association of Popular Science Education Bases, continued to carry out investigation and Research on science culture and Science Popularization Environment in Yunnan minority areas, which has produced a positive social impact.

On July 16, 2021, relying on the existing national and provincial platforms and under the guidance of Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Yunnan Provincial Bureau for Rural Revitalization and other departments, Yunnan Agricultural University established Yunnan Provincial Rural Revitalization Institute. As an interdisciplinary, cross-field, combination of hard and soft technology, opening research institution, The main mission of Yunnan Provincial Rural Revitalization institute is to serve the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy of Yunnan province by means of scientific and technological support, personnel training, information service, decision-making consultation and other means by aggregating all aspects of intellectual resources.
